Getting a letter from the IRS can be stressful, but it doesn't automatically mean trouble. Many notices are simple — a request for information, a math correction, or a balance due. The important thing is to respond correctly and before the deadline printed on the notice.

Start by reading the letter carefully and noting the notice number, the tax year, and the response date. Keep the original and don't ignore it — penalties and interest can grow quickly when notices go unanswered.

Avoid responding with guesses. If the IRS is questioning income, a deduction, or a balance, your response should be backed by documentation. If you owe more than you can pay at once, you may qualify for an installment agreement or penalty relief.

If you're unsure how to respond, we can help. As part of our IRS resolution services, we investigate your account, respond on your behalf, negotiate payment plans, and work to remove penalties so you can put the issue behind you.
